Most summer cardiovascular activities require movement within the frontal plane of the body (i.e., running, hiking, cycling, etc.). Skiing, on the other hand, requires more focus on the lateral movement of your feet – side to side. There are many exercises that simulate this movement. Here’s one that is sports specific and highly effective: Stack some books or small pillows on the floor and hop back and forth over them, clearing them with both feet but landing and springing back on just one foot. Try to land centered on your foot. Your hands should be relaxed and slightly in front of you, looking straight forward with your head up. Since your summer activities may not have had a lot of lateral movement be careful not to overdue it. Progress slowly and you will be ready for the slopes before you know it.
